What to expect

This guided breathwork practice uses the physiological sigh — a natural breathing pattern your body already knows. One of the most studied breathwork techniques, it consists of two inhales through the nose followed by one long, slow exhale through the mouth. Simple, immediate, and backed by neuroscience.

The second inhale fully expands the alveoli in the lungs, improving oxygen exchange and releasing excess carbon dioxide. The extended exhale activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the body's natural calming response — quickly slowing the heart rate and reducing physical signs of stress.

Inhale 1
Deep breath in through the nose
Inhale 2
Short second inhale through the nose
Exhale 6
Long, slow exhale through the mouth

How to practice
01
Find any comfortable position
Sitting, lying down, or standing — this practice works anywhere. You can do it at your desk, before bed, or in a moment of overwhelm.
02
Follow the breath pattern
Inhale fully through the nose, then take a short second inhale to top up the lungs. Then exhale slowly and completely through the mouth.
03
Let the exhale be longer than the inhale
The extended exhale is where the calming effect happens. Don't rush it — let it last as long as feels natural.
04
Repeat 3–5 times
Most people notice a shift within the first few cycles. You can do more if you need to — there's no limit to how many times you can use this technique.
Why it works

The physiological sigh is the most efficient known breathing pattern for reducing stress in real time. Research from Stanford (Yackle et al., 2017) identified the neurons responsible for generating sighs, and subsequent work by Huberman et al. (2023) demonstrated its superiority over other breathing techniques for reducing anxiety and improving mood — in as little as five minutes.
